SGSSS Locating your research
2018/19"Locating Your Research" was a dynamic, hands-on workshop I organized, funded by the Scottish Graduate School, designed specifically for arts, humanities, and social science doctoral candidates. This comprehensive introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial media equipped students with a rich array of techniques, tools, and practices essential for integrating geo-location into their research.
Participants received an in-depth overview of GIS, engaging in practical data collection exercises and acquiring foundational GIS skills. A key component of the workshop was GIS-based story mapping, utilizing the powerful capabilities of QGIS software. Students learned to efficiently set up and gather location-linked data using mobile devices and free mobile apps, immersing themselves in the practical aspects of geospatial research.
Moreover, the workshop emphasized the ethical dimensions of using geospatial media in research, fostering a deeper understanding of the responsibilities and considerations that come with handling geolocation data. This course not only provided valuable technical skills but also instilled a sense of ethical awareness, preparing students to conduct their research with integrity and mindfulness of the broader impacts of their work.
