Zine Making Workshop
2017The "Zine Making Workshop" I conducted for postgraduate research students at the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, University of Glasgow, was a creatively enriching session aimed at exploring the artistic aspects of academic research. This workshop introduced the participants to the unique medium of zine making, a distinctive form of self-publishing that merges scholarly communication with creative expression.
Throughout the workshop, students were guided in the art of crafting zines, beginning from the initial concept to the final piece. They learned to succinctly translate complex research themes into captivating and visually engaging formats, utilising a combination of text, imagery, and graphical elements. This practical experience provided an opportunity for the students to experiment with various layouts, design elements, and narrative techniques, promoting a creative approach to academic dissemination.
The session highlighted the significance of making research accessible and intriguing to a broader audience. Encouraging out-of-the-box thinking, the workshop demonstrated how zines could serve as an effective medium for presenting research in a more personal and impactful manner.
By the conclusion of the workshop, the students had not only produced their own individual zines but also acquired valuable skills in creative thinking and communication, broadening their capacity to present their research in diverse and imaginative ways.
